Bindweed Control without Herbicides

Q: Bindweed is taking over my lawn and gardens.  What can I do without using synthetic herbicides. 

A:  Field bindweed is one of Colorado's most persistent weeds. Its roots can extend 20 feet or more underground, and seeds can remain viable for up to 20 years. That means there isn't a one-time fix—but with persistence, you can win the battle.

Here are some of Colorado State University Extension's recommendations:

Pull or cut it often. Hand-pulling alone won't eliminate established bindweed because the deep roots quickly send up new shoots. However, removing top growth every time you see it weakens the root system over time.

Never let it go to seed. Every flower you prevent from producing seed reduces future infestations. Staying ahead of seed production is one of the most effective long-term strategies.

Shade it out. Bindweed loves full sun. CSU recommends using mulch, landscape fabric, or dense plantings of desirable plants to reduce sunlight and make conditions less favorable for bindweed.

Encourage healthy competition. Vigorous ornamental or vegetable plantings help crowd out bindweed. In lawns, proper fertilization, irrigation, and mowing at 2½–3½ inches can significantly reduce infestations over time.

The key to success is persistence. Every time you prevent bindweed from growing, flowering, or storing energy in its roots, you're gradually tipping the balance in your favor. It may take several seasons, but consistent management really does make a difference.
