Deformed Hollyhock Flowers

Q: My hollyhocks have lovely flower spikes and flower buds, but they fall off or open with deformed flowers. I see small brown little brown bugs among the buds at the tip of the flower spikes. Are they the culprit?
A: Yes. They are called Hollyhock Weevils. A small, beetle-like bug with a long snout. The adults feed on young leaves causing holes, and the flower buds reducing flowering. The immature stage feed on the developing seed in the seed capsules, reducing the plant’s ability to self seed. Control is easy with Spinosad Soap or Neem.
