Garlic Sprouting in Winter

Q: I’ve noticed my garlic has sprouted some leaves above ground already. Is that a problem?

A: Fall planted garlic will often put up some green leaves even though it’s winter. This is completely normal and will not harm your plants. Be sure to keep them well watered and, if you haven’t already, add a 2-3” layer of compost to the planting bed to keep the soil moist and cool. Some of the leaves may get damaged if we ever do get into some seriously cold temperatures this winter. But your plants will put up fresh new growth once spring warms up.
