Is there a native alternative to Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass?

Q: Is there a native alternative to Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass?
A: Yellow Indiangrass (Sorghastrum) is a tall ornamental grass that looks similar to Karl Foerster but is native to North America. Look for xeric ‘Thin Man’ or ‘Golden Sunset’ varieties which are drought tolerant once established. The cultivars are better than the straight species in that they are not prone to flopping or falling open.
Vigorous and sturdy standing 4-6’ tall, sorghastrum blends beautifully with flowering perennials and other grasses in a naturalistic planting. It offers a heavy, earlier bloom and disease-free foliage. It can also be planted as a mass alone or with other tallgrass species to control erosion on a slope.
This grass needs full sun and average or poor soil. Avoid rich soils and wet spots. The species is a warm-season grass, meaning it wakes up a bit later in spring. It’s a strong grower that will outcompete weak companions, something to keep in mind when choosing companions. USDA Zones 3–9.
