Should I fertilize my houseplants during the winter?
A. In most instances it is a good idea to feed your indoor plants during the winter. Most of our indoor plants originate from much warmer climates where they never go truly dormant. Granted, the shorter days, lower light and cooler temps of our winters will slow them down, but as long as your plants have green leaves they still need adequate nutrition. I reduce my fertilizer concentration to ¼ the strength recommended on the label and feed with every other watering or at least twice per month. Cactus and succulents would be one of the most notable exceptions. I discontinue feeding them through the winter and resume when I see new growth in the spring.
