When to Harvest Winter Squash

Q: How do I know when my Acorn and Hubbard winter squash are mature enough to harvest and store well?


A: I use the thumbnail test. Try to insert your thumbnail into the skin of the fruit. If it is difficult to impossible to insert your thumbnail, the squash is ready to harvest. To get the best storage qualities, keep the stem attached to the fruit.
