Q: I planted several varieties of Hydrangea paniculata this year and they were spectacular. Do I prune them now or in the spring?
A: I recommend pruning that type of hydrangea in late winter/early spring before they leaf out. They bloom on new growth so don’t worry about reducing your flower count. Prune young plants minimally the first couple of years while they settle in. Once well-established you can prune them harder to control the eventual size of the plant.
