Where to hang bird houses

Q: When I install a bird house, should it be attached to a surface that doesn’t move, or is it okay to hang it from a branch.
A: Ideal birdhouse placement involves mounting them 5–12 feet high on sturdy, predator-proof poles or structures with the entrance facing away from prevailing winds and out of direct afternoon sun. Place boxes in locations with partial shade, near trees for cover, and at least 30+ feet apart to prevent overcrowding.
Bluebirds and Swallows like open areas, field edges, or large lawns. Wooded areas for Chickadees and Nuthatches, attached to trees or buildings. Ensure a clear flight path to the entrance with no branches directly in front of the hole. Space birdhouses of the same type at least 30 to 50 feet apart (even farther for some species) to reduce territorial conflicts.
Hanging a birdhouse from a branch is sometimes okay if it’s for wrens or chickadees, which tolerate movement. Make sure it’s a thick, sturdy branch and sheltered from the wind. I recommend offering both hanging and rigid mount houses and let the bird choose.
